What is the purpose of COSHH Cabinets?

COSHH Cabinets offer safe storage for hazardous substances (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) in any workplace utilising them. This is defined as substances that are harmful, toxic, corrosive, poisoning or that act as an irritant. Keeping these secure is required by the Health & Safety Executive and it is vital that the cabinets are constructed effectively to ensure compliance and safety. They should be lockable and reinforced, preventing any unauthorised personnel from gaining access and any leaks from spreading from inside the cabinet.

Where can this product be used?

COSHH Cabinets are used across various industrial and non-industrial settings. Factories and manufacturers might use hazardous substances as part of their processes, but harmful substances are also found in daily materials such as cleaning products, meaning that most industrial locations will require a COSHH cabinet of one size or another.

Schools, care homes, hospitals, retail locations and laboratories are examples of non-industrial settings where COSHH Cabinets are commonly found. As with hazardous chemicals and substances in industrial environments, it’s crucial that all products are kept secure, especially when you’re dealing with pupils, vulnerable people and hospital patients. Therefore, cabinets must comply to regulations to make them fit for use around any workplace.

Who might use this product?

Anyone who oversees Health & Safety in a workplace or public environment can be tasked with COSHH storage. These include dedication safety personnel in industrial environments through to lab technicians, caretakers and managers in non-industrial settings. There will usually be one person in overall charge of a COSHH cabinet and they will have the key. This ensures ongoing safety and compliance when dealing with hazardous substances.
